Built-in Electric Fireplace

Here in 2020, built-in electric fires are more popular than ever. The chief reason for this is that technology is reaching new heights. The flames are becoming ever more realistic. The electric flame effects attract users and interior designers alike.

Today, new homes are built as low energy houses, which do not need supplementary heating. Often a regular wood-burning stove, gas- or ethanol fireplace will supply too much heat! That is why electric fireplaces are ideal - the heating effect generated is much lower. These are intelligent fires, where you can adjust the heat based on room temperature. Or, you can turn off the heater if you just want the cosiness of a fire.

Built-in electric fireplaces are also popular because they are available with two, three, or four glass sides. This means that you can use them as a room divider or tunnel that divides a room in two. First-generation electric fires are usually front only.

Electric fires - now with more flame views

Electric fireplaces are now also available with multiple glass sides. Just like other fireplace alternatives like ethanol fires, gas fires, and wood-burning fireplaces. This means that you can see the fire in several rooms or from different seating positions. It is very popular to build in a fire between a living room and a kitchen-dining area. This uses a so-called tunnel fireplace. It is now possible to integrate solutions where you can enjoy the electric fire from two rooms.

Below, we have written a guide to the different types of built-in electric fireplaces. We want to help you to make the right choice for you.

Electric tunnel fireplace with through-going flame

Finally, Europe also got a through-going fireplace, that can separate two rooms. Evonic Fires produces two types of electric tunnel fireplaces. The Lindstrom DS and the E1030DS. Both models have the designation "DS” for double-sided.

We have solutions designed for installing within a wall. Both with full glass on both sides, and a smaller glass by the firebox itself. This is most often featured in the electric fires with water vapour. The glass itself does not get hot, so they are ideal for families with small children or pets. This is both true for the full glass sides, but also the smaller types.

The classic built-in fireplace with front glass

In most homes, a built-in electric fire is most often seen integrated in the wall with a glass facing the room. That was the trend from the previous year or earlier. In 2020 we have noticed an increasing trend towards tunnel- and room divider fireplaces.

If your home is built so it makes the most sense to build in a one-sided electric fire, then this solution is best. We often see these installed in a living room. Here you build the fire into the wall or in a piece of furniture under the TV, so flames are most often seen in this room. Users desire that the fireplace should lend a warm and cosy atmosphere to the living room. Here users relax and spend time with their families and guests.

The advantage of this front-facing fire is that the flames often get a dark, pretty back- and side frame. This means that the flames are more visible due to the reduced light. In fireplaces with multiple open or glass sides, the light can penetrate and make the flames’ vibrant colours less visible.

Three-sided electric fireplace under a TV

A very popular solution is to place a fire under the telly. There are often restrictions about when you are allowed to build in an ethanol or gas fire under a TV. Regulations mean these must be built into fireproof material. Besides, you must be sure to keep your telly safe. We know that the man of the house is often sensitive about his TV and his fireplace, and thus must take precautions.

For example, you can install a shelf under the TV, so the heat does not rise directly into the electronics. Other people choose to build a box to protect the TV. Both these solutions may seem clumsy. A third solution is ventilating the back of the wall containing the fireplace and TV. This is not always simple, especially in an existing wall.

If you want to avoid all this trouble, you can simply choose an electric fireplace. It is made so that you can put a TV or just about anything else above it. With up to three glass sides you can achieve a great viewing angle. Only one question remains: What should be bigger, your fireplace or your TV?

Room divider electric fireplace with three sides

We often see the room divider fireplace in interior design magazines. It is also a common feature on Instagram and other social media. It is a great hit among interior designers and engaged home stylists. An electric fire constructed with three open sides gives a flame view from two rooms, but also in the middle division itself.

The three-sided electric fireplace is often built like a half wall, so it does not make the room seem clumsy. It divides the room whilst keeping the intersection between the two rooms intact. This means that one family member can cook in the kitchen while keeping an eye on the active kids running around the living area.

This solution is often seen in homes where users place a dining table in a living room on one side of the wall. And the other side contains a living room where you can sit down on the sofa. An electric fireplace insert with three sides is often built into new houses.

Another use case is during complete renovations where the family wants a fireplace, but this is not an option. This could be for various reasons, e.g. size constraints, not being able to fit a chimney, or because it would give off too much heat.

The two-sided electric corner fireplace

A newer classic seen integrated into many newer homes. The many home builder companies are great at arranging the space in every room. This trend resonates with many users. We inspire each other on social media, and the corner fireplace is a good example of this.

Why not build in a fireplace with two sides instead of just one? We meet many customers who have this dilemma because a given spot in the house is meant for a fireplace. But the space could also fit a two-sided model. In practice, this can be as simple as cutting out 10-20 cm more to reach the end wall. This allows you to build in a two-sided electric fireplace insert compared to a wall with a front model.
